Artist's Comments

this diptych is shot from large format polaroid film, scanned in, and altered a little bit in photoshop to create nicer gradients....

it's a project for my experimental photo class, and we could basically do whatever we wanted, it just had to be a diptych.....i chose this tree idea because i wanted to portray the part of plants that you don't normally get to see, and that they are just as much a part of the plant, and just as delicate, as the part we do get to see.

definitely do a large view (these separately printed out were 17"x22" each)...so there is LOTS of detail! :)

(and no worries....the rubber plant is happily repotted and living in my house) ;)

:wow: Fabulous concept, and very well executed!!
Its got loads of unresolved tension for such a static shot - for me any way!!
My initial thoughts were to "tidy it up", remove the half leaf in the lower shot, adjust the stems so they match each other in width and put a gradient at the bottom. And then I took a step back and considered a bit more - and thought "No, nature isn't neat and symmetrical, bushes like that are topiary. The lack of gradient around the roots actually illuminates the fact that roots spread and are often more extensive than the branches!"
Its a great example of how a shot can have a thought provoking and constructive narative, more than just being pretty!! And it squashed my symmetry hang up!! Top shot!! :#1:

why thank you! :thanks: and yes, those were my initial thoughts too....but after much consulting with my prof. this became the final product :D
your wording in this comment is just amazing because you picked out everything i was trying to portray....exactly! i'm just so happy that is was successful enough for someone to understand it with no explanation  and i'm glad i could make you like something not completely assymmetrical ;) so thanks again, and thanks for the :+fav:!! :D

Very glad that I "got it" - and I think it shows that you "got it right", not to blatant. Part of the hook is that it was subtle enough to lead me to my usual preconceived ideas, but then to stop me and make me think a little - and come to the conclusions you were aiming me at initially!! The "lesson" has double the impact because of that gentle misdirection, it will stick in my mind!! It doesn't come across all preachy, I don't feel that I've been "taught", just that I've been "led" a little. It goes to show that an apparently innocent image can have quite a powerful message, and I'm glad I was switched on enough to get it - there is far too much two-dimensional "Eye-candy" around - when you get used to seeing shallow things you stop looking for any depth, this is a good reminder - "Stop and Think" !! You achieved your goal - that's as good as it gets!! Well done! :w00t:

thank you so much! :D

You're worth it!! Magic to see someone really "digging it"- and getting good!! :D
